Scalable control technology

The demands on an automation solution vary widely with the type of equipment that needs to be automated. The number of inputs and outputs and the required speed are the key parameters in this. Also, the interfaces and field bus systems used a play an important role. The controls of the WAGO I/O system are modular and not specific to any one field bus. With an extensive portfolio of I/O bus terminals, they always offer the right solution.

As the central component, the processor unit of an automation solution is responsible for processing the signals. Over recent decades automation technology has progressed in parallel with the development of microprocessor technology, so users now have a wide range of options available to them: They extend from the micro-PLCs with 16-bit processors to powerful industrial PCs (IPCs). As the performance of the control systems increases, faster and more extensive automation solutions can be implemented.

It all depends on the application

Not every application requires the fastest control on the market. If only a relatively small machine is being automated, for example, a small PLC such as a modular controller from the WAGO 750 I/O system is often the more economical solution. These compact and robust controllers are available with 16-bit or 32-bit CPUs for all standard field buses. The user programs the controllers, incorporating all the attributes of a conventional PLC, with CoDeSys according to IEC 61131-3. Connections to higher-level IT systems are possible too however. A web server integrated directly into the control runs a visualization system that can be accessed with a web browser.

If the demand for computing power, speed and memory is higher, a WAGO I/O IPC from the 758 series is used. The computing power of this IPC series currently extends up to a 1.4 GHz Pentium processor. As its standard operating system Wago uses Linux with a real-time add-on. A CoDeSys Soft PLC runs on it, which also enables full PLC functionality and programming in accordance with IEC 61131-3. An integrated web server additionally provides visualization directly via Ethernet. Alternatively, a monitor can also be connected directly. The IPCs can optionally also function as masters in a Profibus DP or CANopen bus.

Interfaces to sensors, actuators and the user

All WAGO controllers can be connected directly to the WAGO 750 I/O system. Consequently, the system utilizes its strengths in full when a wide variety of signals need to be acquired or outputted. In total, some 400 different functional terminals are available, all combinable according to the application requirements. The I/O system enables all sensors, actuators and communication protocols to be connected, from analog and digital inputs and outputs to terminals for drive systems and building controls, through to support for a wide range of field bus protocols.

As part of its extensive automation program, WAGO additionally offers control panels on which machine states can be visualized and users can key in data. The flat panels of the PERSPECTO® series, which can be easily integrated into a machine or plant, are available in sizes from 3.5" to 15". The connection to the WAGO 750 I/O system is made via field bus interfaces. Peripherals are connected via standard interfaces.
