EC technology from ebm‑papst
The original

Commutate electronically, benefit economically.

In ventilation and air conditioning technology, the efficiency of the fans used has become a key issue. Not only legislation, but also the growing environmental awareness of companies and consumers as well as the recent sharp rise in energy prices demand ever more energy-efficient solutions.

Conventional fans with asynchronous motors (AC motors) can no longer meet these requirements. The future therefore belongs to EC technology, which ebm‑papst is driving forward. In principle, an EC motor is an electronically commutated, permanent magnet synchronous motor. The decisive advantage is a significantly higher efficiency of up to 90 % compared to 70-80 % for AC motors. This not only means better use of primary energy, but also less heat loss and therefore a longer service life.

ebm‑papst was one of the first manufacturers to recognize the economic and ecological advantages of EC technology. We launched the world's first EC/DC compact fan back in 1965 - 30 years before any other manufacturer. With GreenTech, we gave our conviction a visible sign in 2010 and are thus pursuing a strict holistic approach - from forward-looking development and environmentally friendly production to economic benefits for our customers. Today, our development lead is reflected in the world's largest range of EC fans and motors.

Advantages of EC technology at a glance

The combination of high motor efficiency and an optimized impeller & housing design makes fans with EC technology from ebm‑papst energy-efficient.

  • High efficiency due to low copper and iron losses
  • No remagnetization losses
  • No slip losses due to synchronized operation
  • Air intake into the impeller, positioning of the external rotor motor in the impeller and blade profile optimize efficiency and low noise levels
  • Optimized factory positioning of nozzle

Our EC motors have an intelligent MODBUS-RTU interface as standard. This allows any number of control functions to be implemented - from interconnecting several fans to complex automation tasks.

  • Configurable inputs/outputs (I/O)
  • RS 485 MODBUS-RTU / MODBUS V6
  • External 15-50 VDC input (parameterization)

Thanks to electronic commutation, the EC motor has fewer wearing parts. This reduces maintenance requirements and makes the fans particularly durable.

  • Brushless commutation
  • Maintenance-free bearings

In addition to maintenance-friendly technology, our EC motors and fans offer many other features that improve their safety and durability.

  • Operating and fault message via LED
  • Vibration sensors and resonance detection software prevent operation in critical areas
  • Blocking and overtemperature protection for electronics/motor
  • Soft start and fault signal relay
  • Motor current limitation
  • Undervoltage & phase failure detection
  • Control interface with SELV potential safely disconnected from the mains

As our EC external rotor motors have higher torques than internal rotor motors due to their design, fewer powerful magnets are required. This means we can completely dispense with rare earths - which protects the environment and makes the costs of EC motors more calculable.

  • Use of inexpensive and readily available ferrites
  • Contributing to the protection of people and the environment
  • Lower weight to conserve resources during transportation and installation

AC motors generally only know the On and Off states. Motors with EC technology can be infinitely variable in speed and thus enable demand-based operation. To implement complex or special control tasks, we recommend the control units of our automation partners.

  • High adaptability thanks to infinitely variable speed
  • Enables precise control and customization according to needs or requirements
  • Safe automation with "approved controller"

In noise-sensitive environments, loud motors are undesirable - and whisper-quiet EC motors from ebm‑papst are all the more welcome. The reason for this is the particularly low-noise commutation, which is precisely adapted to the 3-speed motor. Added to this is the infinitely variable speed control, which also significantly reduces the fan's noise emissions in partial load operation.

  • Commutation & stator design ensure low-noise magnetization of the exciter field
  • In addition, the high clock frequency is acoustically imperceptible

In motors with EC technology, the power current is independent of the mains current. This means that it can be used in both direct current and alternating current networks (1 and 3 phases) - i.e. practically anywhere.

Despite integrated commutation and control electronics, our EC fans have the same installation dimensions as their AC counterparts. This is made possible by the external rotor design, in which the rotor rotates around the stator. This allows the motor to be integrated directly into the impeller.

  • Simple 1:1 exchange from AC to EC
  • Perfect for retrofitting

Our EC motors already have the control electronics integrated. This saves costly external measures and makes installation and commissioning very easy.

  • All necessary functions are already integrated and coordinated
  • Elimination of time-consuming programming work and earthing/shielding measures
  • Simple commissioning thanks to central terminal area for mains connection, fault signal relay, control and communication
  • Reliable connection thanks to high-quality connection terminals
