The new ebm-papst
global material number system

The aim is to ensure that all ebm‑papst product designations around the world follow a standardised and consistent system, no matter where a product is purchased, developed, manufactured or sold.

Leverage synergies

Today there are more than 30 different material number systems within the ebm‑papst Group. Often up to 5 different system types have to be managed at a single site because the production process has been relocated. This is extremely complex and, at present, means that it is very difficult to leverage synergies.

In order to continue to grow in the future, and to meet the demands of its customers, ebm‑papst is accelerating the globalisation of its production network. Procurement and development centers in Asia and America are increasingly gaining in significance and importance. However, if you are a global player, you must also speak a globally standardised language.

The new and globally standardized material number system makes it much easier to determine exactly where each product is processed and used. This means that resources can be used around the world much more efficiently, and we can pool our procurement potential more effectively. But, above all, it will facilitate global communication and allow information to be exchanged more quickly.

What does the new global material number system mean for ebm-papst customers?

Customers who already specify the ebm-papst material number on their orders (e.g: W1G200EC8720, 9274014351, 55330.01083, etc.) do not have to change or add anything to their orders.

We are asking customers who still use the ebm-papst type designation, which is still valid at the moment, on their orders (e.g. 4650N, iQ3612-310250-V10.0, etc.) to add the material number in future in order to avoid incorrect deliveries and misunderstandings.

No, as the material number for existing products remains unchanged, the approvals remain valid and will not change. Markings relevant to the approvals will still be on the labels.

In some cases, the label is being changed to include the new type designation. Affected customers will be informed in good time about the planned changes.

If you would like a list, please contact the ebm-papst sales representative responsible for you, who will be happy to provide you with one.

ebm-papst Mulfingen
So far, ebm-papst Mulfingen products have had no type designation.

ebm-papst St. Georgen
As the type designation for ebm-papst St. Georgen products is changing, you will find the new 12-digit type designation, the future global material number and the previous type designation on all documents (order confirmations, delivery notes, invoices, etc.) for a certain amount of time during the transition period.

ebm-papst Landshut
For ebm-papst Landshut products, only the new type designation and the material number are printed on the documents. The old type designation is no longer mentioned on documents (order confirmations, delivery notes, invoices, etc.).

The aim is to ensure that all ebm‑papst product designations around the world follow a standardised and consistent system, no matter where a product is purchased, developed, manufactured or sold.

The new material number system at a glance

Using the future, ten-digit material number, you will be able to determine whether you are dealing with an end product, a component or a sample. Within the world of ebm-papst, each material number is unique, and describes a product clearly and unambiguously.

It is essential that customer orders have this material number on them. It represents a unique order number for our customers.

However, the material numbers of existing products will not be changed, meaning that all existing approvals remain valid even after the new global material number system is introduced.

Important:

The new type designation is not unique!  Several products may have the same type designation. However, each ebm-papst product can be clearly and unmistakably identified by its material number.

This is why it is important that, every time they place an order, customers not only state the type designation but also the material number.

The type designation contains important information about a product in coded form. Both existing and new products will be given a new type designation.

Based on this type designation, our products can be assigned to certain classes. However, in contrast to the material number, a particular product cannot be uniquely identified using the type designation. This means that several ebm-papst products can have the same type designation.

The new type designation

Explanation

The new type designation consists of 12 digits. The first digit indicates the product category (e.g. fan, motor, pump, electronics, gas valve, etc.).

The meaning of each digit fundamentally depends on the previous digits.

The following example illustrates the type designation of an axial fan (without fan housing) with airflow direction "A" and 200 mm impeller diameter.

Gradual introduction

The material numbers of existing products, i.e. those placed on the market before the new material number system was introduced, remain unchanged. However, all ebm-papst products, regardless of whether they have been generated recently or already exist, will be given a new type designation.

The new global material number system will be introduced step by step:

From January 2019, the designation for accessories and individual parts will be changed on all documents. The material number of existing items remains unchanged.
