CompaNamic HighSpeed: Compact Power for the Future of Refrigeration
When it comes to refrigeration and heat pump systems, efficiency, reliability, and system simplicity matter more than ever. As industries work to reduce energy consumption, improve performance, and advance sustainability goals, compressor technology continues to play a critical role.
With the introduction of the CompaNamic HighSpeed turbo compressors, ebm‑papst takes the next step in compressor innovation. These oil-free compressors combine compact integration with high-performance operation, setting new benchmarks for efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in modern refrigeration and heat pump applications.
What is a Compressor?
To explain what makes our HighSpeed turbo compressors so great, we’ll start with the basics. What is a compressor? At the core of every refrigeration or heat pump system is the compressor. Its role is to circulate refrigerant and compress it to higher pressures and temperatures, allowing heat to be transferred from one location to another. By drawing in low-pressure refrigerant gas and compressing it into a smaller volume, the compressor raises the gas’s temperature and pressure, enabling it to release or absorb heat as it moves through the system. Without this process, refrigeration and heat pump systems simply could not function.
What Sets ebm‑papst Apart? HighSpeed Innovation
Our CompaNamic HighSpeed turbo compressors combine advanced aerodynamics, high-efficiency motor technology, and sophisticated electronics with gas bearing technology, including a herringbone bearing design. This bearing’s use in oil-free compressors marks a key advancement, enabling extremely high rotational speeds with stable, quiet operation.
The result is a powerful compressor solution that remains remarkably compact and lightweight. The HighSpeed motor allows system designers to reduce overall unit size while maintaining excellent performance, opening new possibilities for space-constrained applications. At the same time, liquid cooling using either coolant or refrigerant ensures reliable operation even under demanding conditions.
The Benefits of an Oil-Free Refrigerant Cycle
One of the most significant innovations of the CompaNamic platform is its completely oil-free design. By eliminating oil from the refrigerant cycle, the system no longer requires oil separators or oil handling components. This simplifies system architecture while improving heat transfer and overall efficiency.
Without oil circulating through the system, heat exchangers remain clean over the lifetime of the equipment, avoiding fouling that can reduce performance over time. The result is a more stable operation, improved system efficiency, and significantly reduced maintenance requirements. The oil-free design also enables a more compact system layout with reduced internal gas volume and lower refrigerant charge. Together, these advantages help system manufacturers create more efficient and sustainable refrigeration solutions.
Designed for Sustainability
Sustainability was a key focus in the development of the CompaNamic HighSpeed turbo compressors. The compressors operate completely free of oil and PFAS and are designed to work with natural refrigerants such as propane. Combined with their high efficiency, this enables energy savings of up to 40 percent compared to refrigeration systems using conventional compressors.
This commitment to sustainability has already been recognized internationally. CompaNamic was named the winner of the 2026 German Sustainability Award, with the jury highlighting the product’s strong environmental performance across its entire lifecycle, from reduced material consumption and energy-efficient operation to simplified disposal at the end of service life. As a central component in heating and cooling technologies, the compressor can make a meaningful contribution to energy savings, climate protection, and the advancement of a circular economy.
Engineered for High Performance
The CompaNamic HighSpeed platform is built to support a wide range of refrigeration and heat pump applications, including chillers, stationary air conditioning systems, refrigeration equipment, and residential or commercial heat pumps.
The compressor delivers up to 10 kW of electrical power and reaches speeds of up to 160,000 rpm, with compact dimensions of approximately 300 × 130 mm and a weight of around 6 kilograms. It also achieves thermal capacities of up to 30 kWth (8.5 TR) with R290 and 35 kWth (10 TR) with R1234ze(E), making it well suited for higher-capacity applications.
Paired with high-power, high-frequency drive electronics, the compressor supports a variety of grid structures, including 3-phase AC power and high-voltage DC configurations, giving system manufacturers the flexibility to integrate it into a wide range of system architectures. Additionally, even higher thermal capacity versions are planned.
A Compact Solution with Big Impact
From improved heat transfer and reduced pressure losses to lower vibration and flexible installation positions, the CompaNamic HighSpeed turbo compressors deliver a range of system-level benefits. Their perfect balance results in exceptionally low vibration levels, while the absence of oil-handling equipment further simplifies system design. For manufacturers of refrigeration and heat pump systems, this means greater freedom in system architecture, improved reliability, and the ability to deliver more efficient solutions to customers.
Shaping the Future of Refrigeration Technology
With CompaNamic HighSpeed turbo compressors, ebm‑papst is expanding its expertise beyond fans and motors to play a critical role in the next generation of refrigeration and heat pump systems. By combining compact design, oil-free operation, and high-speed performance, the platform helps system manufacturers meet the growing demand for efficient and sustainable cooling technologies.
