DCV - Demand Controlled Ventilation

This term describes the demand-controlled operation of a ventilation system. The air exchange rate relates to the current room demand, not to the calculated full load. Air quality and temperature are used as control variables for the associated precision air flow controllers (VAV-Compact) from Belimo.

The fans in the air conditioning system run according to demand and energy-efficiently. To achieve this, the demand of the downstream air flow controllers is used directly to control the intelligent infinitely variable EC fans. Only the exact pressure necessary to transport the required partial air flow through the duct system is generated. DCV systems of this kind conform to energy efficiency class A, EN 15232 - Energy efficiency of buildings, and are a byword for highly energy-efficient building automation and technical building services management. Are you looking for ventilation systems offering high levels of comfort combined with low energy consumption? With a DCV system, that’s no longer wishful thinking!

Note:
Conventional admission pressure-controlled ventilation systems are operated in such a way that the admission pressure matches the full load volume continuously, even when running at partial load most of the time. The excess admission pressure generated at partial load is eliminated by the damper blades of the downstream VAV boxes. The consequences:

  • Excessively high duct pressure with unnecessary pressure loss in the duct system and via the VAV boxes.
  • Increased flow noise.
  • Unnecessarily high energy consumption by the fans.

Fan Optimizer principle - the pressure-returned air flow control system

In a pressure-returned air flow control system1), the flap positions of the VAV controllers are captured via a field bus, MP bus, LON, Modbus, KNX®, etc. and used as a demand signal for energy-efficient control of the infinitely variable EC fans. This method is referred to as the “Fan Optimizer” function or principle.

The Fan Optimizer principle evaluates the system's damper configuration to generate the setpoint value for the EC fans. This runs the fans down almost to the optimum operating point (setpoint O) until the dampers are mostly in the optimum operating range. Closing dampers signify falling demand/pressure too high, opening dampers signify rising demand/pressure too low: the EC fans are adjusted down or up along the system curve accordingly.

The result and benefits:

  • Reduced pressure loss in the duct system
  • Lower pressure in the duct system
  • Lower flow noise
  • Significantly reduced energy consumption by the fans

1) Not to be confused with a pressure-controlled system.
The main disadvantage of conventional pressure-controlled systems is that the fan control is open loop, meaning there is no feedback from the air flow controllers. Not the current air flow demand, but the duct admission pressure (K) required at full load, is applied to calculate the setpoint. If the air flow is reduced, the pressure in the duct system rises along the fan curve. The pressure control then regulates the channel pressure back to the full load level; the currently required partial load setpoint is unknown. The downstream VAV boxes are forced to eliminate the excess duct pressure (K-O) by closing the dampers. In practice, VAV boxes with dampers closed down as far as 10% in some cases are encountered on such systems.

The consequences:

  • Unnecessarily high pressure loss in the duct system and via the VAV boxes. As a result, the energy consumption of the fans is much too high.
  • Unnecessarily high pressure in the duct system. Resulting in disturbing flow noises.
  • Every change, every air flow adjustment, requires manual correction of the duct pressure setpoint. In practice, however, this is rarely implemented - which is of course not without consequences.
