Commodity Manager

Job Title: Commodity Manager

The Commodity Manager within the Sourcing organization reporting to the Sourcing Manager is responsible for sourcing and managing suppliers of raw material commodities, finished goods and related accessories. The candidate will have primary accountability managing all sourcing activities for assigned commodities. The Commodity Manager’s primary objective will be to establish and execute a global sourcing strategy to achieve the business objectives and goals. The Commodity Manager will be expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of best sourcing management techniques, practices and strategies, including: strategic sourcing; fact-based negotiation; supply market analysis; supplier relationship development; and global sourcing, optimizing total cost and total value of the assigned commodities. The Commodity Manager will work closely with internal Sourcing Management, customers and stakeholders to understand their business needs/objectives, material/category, commodity requirements and broader manufacturing processes.

Essential Functions of the Job:
The essential functions of this job require the person, with or without reasonable accommodations, to perform the following:  

  • Act as global supply management leader for assigned commodities. Initiate supplier identification, assessment, selection/RFQ process, and development processes. Develop and execute commodity sourcing strategies to meet customer and business unit objectives.
  • Lead cross functional teams and manage supply chain goals improving value-to-cost relationship by focusing on total cost of ownership, quality, delivery, service and working capital.
  • Lead all commercial negotiations with commodity suppliers.
  • Proactively manage supplier base ensuring supply with no adverse impact on the business. Analyze, identify and understand supply chain risks and develop contingency plans to mitigate
  • Utilize formal benchmarking methods to determine best in class processes and drive improvement maintaining at the forefront of emerging industry practices
  • Measure and track supply performance within assigned commodities. Resolves and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion
  • Effectively communicate with appropriate management levels both internally and externally
  • Project scoping – Assess the scope of cost reduction projects, resources required, potential savings, risks and assumptions and implementation plan
  • Project management – Lead, guide and coach cross-functional team members through the implementation of global cost reduction projects. Prepare and communicate material for project gate review sign-off meetings
  • Conduct business dealings with the highest level of integrity and regard for legal and environmental issues
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and makes constructive suggestions for change
  • Use data analytics/metrics to solve problems, reach business goals and forecast future needs.
  • Maintain qualified, cost-effective backup suppliers for all key commodities.
  • Work internally and externally to identify material alternatives that reduce total cost of ownership or landed cost.
  • Create and maintain detailed profiles of supplier capabilities, processes, facilities, contacts, etc.; communicate and make available to all areas of the business.
  • Understand, track, and forecast the key cost drivers and market factors for relevant commodities.
  • Manage and optimize supplier performance, including cost, quality, delivery, innovation, and flexibility.
  • Communicate cross-functionally to gather performance scorecard information and lead meaningful business reviews with suppliers. Focus on delivering projects on time, at cost and to specifications.
  • Support Engineering and Quality functions in locating, identifying, developing and qualifying appropriate sources for products that meet required Engineering and Quality performance targets.
  • Manage negotiation and implementation of contracts by working with cross functional stakeholders and suppliers to reach agreement on contract terms and conditions. Renegotiate, renew and discontinue existing supplier contracts.
  • Analyze industry trends and evolving technology to proactively identify supply base issues to minimize risk, protect continuity to supply, and exploit emerging opportunities that benefit ebm‑papst Global.
  • Travel as necessary to effectively accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities. Adhere to the Company’s Travel Policy.
  • Working knowledge of JIT programs including consignment, VMI, Kanban
  • Ability to read prints, CAD drawings, specifications.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Sourcing Manager.

Recommended Education and/or Experience:

  • BS Required. Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, Materials or equivalent desired.
  • Minimum 3+ years of Global Sourcing Category/Commodity Management experience.
  • Experience working for North American multinational environment with Global Sourcing responsibilities.
  • Commodity Management experience with motors, stator/rotor, die cast, plastic injection molded, deep draw, fans, lamination stacks, over molding, pcb, pcba, wire harness, o-rings, and seals preferred.
  • Direct spend category management.
  • Leading Contract and Supply agreement negotiations globally.
  • Leading teams and project management.
  • Strategic sourcing planning and execution.
  • Six Sigma training and /Greenbelt certification a plus.
  • Project management experience or manager certification a plus.
