Record turnout at 13th ebm-papst Marathon

Last weekend, over 3,000 athletes participated in the 13th ebm-papst Marathon, which has been organized jointly by ebm-papst and the "Polizeisportverein Hohenlohekreis", a regional sports organization, since 1999. A new record!

After several years, the marathon was once again won by a runner from the region, Markus Mühlbeyer from Öhringen-Cappel, Germany. Along the course and in the Start-Finish area in Niedernhall, some 10,000 spectators cheered the athletes on.

Significant growth was seen in the number of participants, particularly in the marathon and duo-marathon. However, Nordic walking also experienced a real boom. In this discipline, which began the event on Saturday, the number of participants increased by more than 40 percent, to 285. They started despite threatening dark clouds in the sky. Thankfully, Saturday and Sunday passed without lengthy rain showers. On Sunday afternoon, the Kocher Valley even saw some sunshine.

The winner of the marathon was Markus Mühlbeyer of Team Hercules, with a time of 2:42:55. Still, he did not completely reach his goal, as he wanted to beat his all-time record of 2 hours and 40 minutes. Mühlbeyer will try again in the Munich Marathon on October 12th. Frank Menikheim of the FC Igersheim soccer team, an athlete from the Main-Tauber district, took second place with a time of 2:44:40. Christian Woehrel of ebm-papst France fell far behind expectations, taking only 16th place. The fastest woman in the 42-kilometer race was another native of the region, Forchtenberg's Therese Braemer, whose time was 3:23:30. The winners of the duo marathon, which was offered for the second time and in which two runners split the marathon distance, were Steffen Straub and Jakob Schoof of the Stuttgart running store Heart & Sole. Their time was 2:36:42.

In the 10k run, Dr. Karl Durst, a mechanical engineer from Waldenburg, took first with a time of 33:24. Last year's winner Marco Lack (SCHUNK Speedys) had to make do with second place, at 33:35. Taking third with 34:14 was Günter Seibold of the TSV Crailsheim 1846 football club. His fellow member, Theresa Kett, was the fastest woman in the 10k. With a time of exactly 39 minutes, she beat Kirsten Weimar-Silcher (VLG/TV Flein club).

Female winners of the half marathon were Elke Brenner (LG Neckar-Enz), who took first with a time of 1:26:52. The regional favorite, Branka Hajek from Vellberg-Großaltdorf, ran the 21 kilometers in 1:29:20. Third place was Barbara Keller (ETSV Lauda) with 1:31:20.
The fastest male half marathon runner was Fabian Lafrenz of the LG Neckar-Enz club with 1:12:18. He beat Kay-Uwe Müller from Ilshofen (1:17:13) and Markus Mayer of the LG Limes-Rems, who trailed Müller by just one second.

CCI President Thomas Philippiak, who had promoted the ebm-papst Marathon as the company's Managing Director since 1999 and continues to be in charge of it after his retirement, gave a positive assessment on Sunday evening. "Despite the bad weather forecast and the increasing number of running events, we were able to attract significantly more participants. This shows that our combination of sporting event and family festival is the right way to go."
