ebm-papst Keeps Heads Cool on the Pit Wall

In the tricky situations that arise during a race, the Engineers on the Pit Wall need to make the right decisions within seconds. Thanks to the air conditioning system supported by fans from ebm-papst, the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula OneTM Team's Engineers have benefitted from a more comfortable environment in which to make their decisions from since the beginning of the 2016 season.

On the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Pit Wall, five Engineers monitor the performance of both cars during each race, paying attention to even the smallest of details. The strategy, for example, analyzes over 150,000 possible scenarios in real time to help determine the plan for the race. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, the air conditioning system for both, the team members and the electronics on the Pit Wall, has been significantly improved. A simple fan with uncooled air previously did the job. "The switch to real air conditioning makes our working environment on the pit wall much more comfortable" explained Paddy Lowe, Executive Director (Technical) of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula OneTM Team. "Even during races in hot locations such as Asia, it's easier to for us to stay cool. The electronics also have the optimal temperature now."

The Engineers can adjust the amount of cool air directed towards them via a total of 10 air outlets installed between the top of the table and the Pit Wall monitors. Two air conditioning units on the sides of the strategic command center generate the cool air before the high-performance centrifugal blowers with single inlets and forward-curved blades from ebm-papst guide it to the outlets and the electronics. It was easy for the team to choose their fan supplier for the system. "We have already successfully achieved a number of projects with our team partner ebm-papst, such as air conditioning within the Garage and on-car cooling" explains Lowe. "This is why ebm-papst was the logical choice."

For the Formula OneTM Team it was a major advantage that team partner ebm-papst was able to quickly supply the ideal fans for the application thanks to its wide product range. This facilitated the project's rapid realization.
