"AxiTop® diffuser for noise reduction" is an outstanding idea for the city of the future

The "AxiTop® diffuser for noise reduction", developed by ebm-papst Mulfingen GmbH & Co. KG, was honoured as one of 100 prizewinners in the nationwide innovation competition "Outstanding Places in the Land of Ideas" 2013/14 on 21st February 2014. The award ceremony took place during the regional competition of "Youth Research", now in its sixteenth year, in the Reinhold-Würth University in Künzelsau.

The product, with its focus on the topic of "Ideas in the city" in the economics category, provides a convincing answer to the question of how to significantly reduce both the noise levels of industrial air-conditioning systems and noise pollution in residential areas. Thanks to the use of the environmentally friendly diffuser, the technology not only lowers the noise level, but also reduces the energy requirements by a quarter, therefore saving costs. The prize for the "AxiTop® diffuser for noise reduction" cements the Mulfingen-based fan manufacturer's position as (inter)national market leader. ebm-papst was taking part for the fifth time in the "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative and has been successful every time.

Michael Kahrs, Regional Director of Deutsche Bank Large Corps for the Stuttgart region, presented the prize for "Outstanding Place 2013/14" to Rainer Hundsdörfer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ebm-papst Group, and said: "With the AxiTop, ebm-papst has once again proven the innovative power of small and medium-sized businesses in Germany. Businesses like this are the backbone of our economy: driving progress and shaping the future." Deutsche Bank has been supporting the "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative for eight years and shares ebm-papst's joy in receiving the award. In his speech, Michael Kahrs praised ebm-papst as an employer of the future, who protects the environment with its products and makes an important contribution to fighting climate change. "Companies like ebm-papst, with their ground-breaking inventions, ensure that a resource-poor country like Germany can impress nationally and internationally with its high degree of innovation," he added.

"The project from ebm-papst is one of 100 projects from all over the country that our jury found particularly impressive," said Christine Montigel, representative from Land of Ideas. Rainer Hundsdörfer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ebm-papst Group, commented on the award: "We are very proud to be an "outstanding place" in the land of ideas and to be able to show a solution for life in the city of the future."

Thanks to the aerodynamically optimally adjusted diffuser, energy consumption is significantly reduced (-27%), whilst also lowering noise emissions by an impressive -7.2dB(A) at the same operating point. No change is required to the customer device for installation, even existing systems can be retrofitted.

15 ebm-papst employees from Aerodynamics, Design, Purchasing, Sales and Production were involved in the core team for developing and implementing the AxiTop. The success in the"Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative is the reward for the project team's great dedication. The expert jury, consisting of scientists, business managers, journalists and politicians together with a four-person advisory council, chose the "AxiTop® diffuser for noise reduction" from around 1,000 applications.

The history of the "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative goes back to former Federal President Horst Köhler. In his inaugural speech on 23rd March 2004, he spoke of Germany as the land of ideas. The former president's words quickly turned into the idea for the nationwide "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative. The joint national initiative from the worlds of politics and business was founded in 2005 by the federal government and the BDI, the voice of German industry. The initiative was originally planned to be limited to the football World Cup, held in Germany in 2006. "Since then, the projects and nationwide competitions have made an important contribution to strengthening for the long term Germany's reputation as the land of ideas, both at home and abroad," said Christine Montigel.
