EU goes green and ebm-papst is there: Standard for 2015 fulfilled today

With the ErP Directive, the EU is requiring that fan manufacturers design their products as energy-efficient by 2015. The GreenTech EC technology developed by ebm-papst meets these requirements already, so there is no need to be concerned about the two-stage implementation plan.

The European Union has made it its duty to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020. One measure for achieving this is the EuP Directive (Energy-using Products Directive) adopted by the EU in 2005, which was renamed the ErP Directive (Energy-related Products Directive) in 2009 and is also referred to (in Germany) as the Eco-design Directive. It requires of fan manufactures that their fans with power ranges from 125 W to 500 kW meet defined efficiency requirements, regardless of whether such fans are to perform as individual units or be integrated as components into devices or systems.

To remove energy hogs from use, the first stage of the plan is to go into effect starting January 2013 and will prohibit presumably 30% of the fans currently available on the market from being approved. Starting in 2015, an additional 20% of products will be replaced by more efficient ones. All fans that fulfil the standard can be recognised by their CE mark.

To determine whether a fan satisfies the ErP Directive, the efficiency of the complete and fully operational fan is assessed, i.e. the entire unit consisting of control electronics (if present), motor and fan impeller. The threshold ranges are applied very strictly. The fact of the matter, however, is that ebm-papst already offers an energy-efficient alternative in GreenTech EC technology – that not only meets but exceeds by far the new requirements – for nearly every fan that will have to be replaced.

"Based on our GreenTech philosophy, the decision of the EU to enforce energy-saving fans has our full support," said Hans-Jochen Beilke, Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors of the ebm-papst Group. "The ErP standard ensures that no more energy-hungry fans can be brought to market, increases the concentration of energy-efficient products, and secures highly skilled jobs in Europe."
